Exactly what dotnet new gitignore writes with the .NET 10.0.3xx SDK (259 patterns), checked by a test. Save it as .gitignore next to your .sln or .slnx file, at the root of the repository.

Secrets and your own settings
Files that belong to one developer or hold secrets: .env files, Visual Studio's per-user settings (.suo, .user) and its hidden .vs folder, Rider's .idea folder, and VS Code's folder except the shared settings, tasks, launch and extensions files. *.pfx certificates, *.publishsettings and publish profiles (*.pubxml) are in the publishing group below; they can contain credentials too. The .vs block also has a commented-out wwwroot/ line: uncomment it only if a build step generates your whole wwwroot folder.

Build output
Everything a build creates: bin/ and obj/ (in any letter case, hence [Bb]in/), Debug and Release folders, the artifacts/ folder of the .NET 8+ artifacts output layout, symbol files (*.pdb), logs and binary build logs (*.binlog), and C++ intermediates. None of it should be committed: every machine and CI run rebuilds it. *.rsp is ignored except Directory.Build.rsp, which holds shared dotnet build arguments.

Create it from the command line
dotnet new gitignore
Run it in the repository root. Visual Studio adds a similar file when you create a Git repository from the IDE. The template comes from GitHub's VisualStudio.gitignore, which is also what GitHub offers when you create a repository and pick VisualStudio.
How the patterns work
bin/: a trailing slash matches folders only, at any depth.
[Bb]in/: a character set, so Bin/ and bin/ both match on case-sensitive file systems.
*.user: * matches anything except a slash; **/ matches any number of folders.
!Directory.Build.rsp: a leading ! re-includes something an earlier line excluded. It cannot re-include a file inside an excluded folder.
#wwwroot/: lines starting with # are comments, so these are switched off until you remove the #.
To see which line ignores a file: git check-ignore -v path/to/file.
bin and obj are already committed
.gitignore only affects files Git does not track yet. Remove the tracked copies from the index (your files stay on disk), then commit:
git rm -r --cached .
git add .
git commit -m "Apply .gitignore"
What it does not cover
Secrets in appsettings.json: the file is committed on purpose, so keep secrets out of it (user secrets in development, environment variables or a key vault in production). User secrets live in your profile folder, outside the repository, so they need no entry. Add your own lines at the end for anything else your project generates, such as a local SQLite database (*.db) or a folder of uploads.
FAQ
How do I create a .gitignore for a .NET project?
Run dotnet new gitignore in the repository root. It writes the standard Visual Studio .gitignore, the same one shown on this page.
Should bin and obj be in .gitignore?
Yes. They hold build output and intermediate files that every build recreates, and committing them causes merge conflicts and bloated repositories.
Should the .vs folder be committed?
No. .vs holds Visual Studio's per-user caches and settings, and the template ignores it.
Is appsettings.json ignored?
No, and it should not be: it holds configuration the app needs. Keep secrets out of it with user secrets, environment variables or a key vault.
My bin folder is still tracked after adding .gitignore. Why?
.gitignore does not affect files already tracked. Run git rm -r --cached . then git add . and commit; the files stay on disk.
Where do I put the .gitignore?
In the repository root, usually next to the solution file. Git also reads .gitignore files in subfolders, which apply to that folder.
